Website hackers and my website?

My website was hacked and the souce test altered, but how??? I mean presumably they can see the page source by right clicking and copy the text onto their computer for editing, but how did they use the edited text to replace the original page? How can this be stopped? Help me understand the process and I'll give best answer.
