Is it true that the Soviet Union wanted to help in the overthrow of Apartheid?

Because Mandela was not interested in making his country a slave state of the USSR and a communist country. He was also not interested in giving the underground wealth of South Africa to the USSR. He wanted an independant country. So he refused.
